3 best ways to create eye-catching eBook covers

Writing the content of an eBook should most likely be the easy part. We all know our topics, after all, we’re experts in our respective field, right? However designing eBook Covers can be a bit challenging.

Once we have our eBook title and content, the final part, and not the least important, is to design an eye-catching cover that will also be used to create one or more mockups.

Over the years, I have tried multiple softwares and various online services to create eBook covers and I must say, even though all of those softwares and services claim to be ‘the best’, they all vary in terms of simplicity and results we can achieve, especially for the non-graphic designers.

Here are my 3 best ways to create eye-catching eBook covers!

#1 - Do-It-Yourself in Canva

Canva has been a game-changer in my opinion. With the amount of design templates available and ready to be modified and customized, there is no better and easier place than Canva as a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) option.

Let me state this though - Canva DOES NOT replace a professional graphic designer. Yet, for anyone wanting to create an eye-catching eBook cover without hiring a designer, Canva is the answer.

Its 100% drag-and-drop interface is simple to use, it provides an amazing amount of templates to choose from, they are simple to modify and brand with an amazing selection of fonts, unlimited colors, photo gallery, AND, the ability to import and resize any one of our personal images.

I’ve been super impressed with Canva, it has replaced most of my design tools and has become my go-to place.

#2 - Outsource

Not looking for a DIY option? Then, I would recommend outsourcing!

There are so many graphic designers and resources available online these days, that finding the right one to create an eye-catching eBook cover isn’t that difficult anymore.

Two ways it can be done.

  • One, by asking for graphic designer referrals from other creators or in groups and reaching out to them. Make sure to ask for some of their works, portfolio, etc.
  • Two, by looking for eBook cover designers online in places such as Fiverr. There again, there are hundreds of designer options to choose from, at various costs and turn-around time. It is simple to look at their work and to engage with them BEFORE making a decision to move forward.

Outsourcing is definitely one of the best ways to create an eye-catching eBook cover.

#3 - Run an eBook design contest

Want to step it up a notch and have multiple design options to choose from? AND ask your audience for feedback?
Consider running an eBook design contest on 99designs!

One of the great features of 99designs is the ability to run a contest and simply choose the design we like the best at the end.

Here’s how it works:

  • We give all of the details about our project (in this case, the eBook cover).
  • We choose a contest plan (there are multiple paid plans to choose from with various level of professional designers)
  • We get multiple proposals from a selection of designers, AND we get to communicate with every one of them to make modifications.
  • From the selection, we get a page with all of the designs and we can send that page to our audience to vote. How cool is that?
  • Then we narrow it down to a few for a final round
  • We repeat the same process, we ask our audience to vote for the final selection.
  • We choose the design that we feel is the best (the winner).

That’s it!

The concept is brilliant, and when the eBook is going to be used as a paid digital product, it is well worth the 99designs cost. After all, that eBook cover might make a big difference in how well that particular eBook sells!
