5 Struggles new bloggers face – How to overcome them

Starting a blog can be very exciting, but from what I’ve experienced, new bloggers often face many struggles that can make the journey challenging. If you’re a new blogger, you might be wondering how to overcome these challenges and make your blog successful. I’ve compiled five of the most common struggles new bloggers face and how to overcome them.

new bloggers

First challenge: Finding a blog niche and a unique angle

One of the first challenges for new bloggers is deciding on a niche and a unique angle. A niche is a specific topic for a specific audience that a blog focuses on. Having a niche is the key to get started. Without a clear blog topic (niche), your mind goes in multiple directions with conflicting ideas and feelings. Sometimes, it’s difficult to even get started, even though you really want to blog. But once you know exactly what you are going to blog about, everything becomes easier. This means choosing a specific topic to focus on and making sure your blog stands out.

What I recommend

Starting by looking at your passions and interests. Ask yourself: What are the hobbies, activities, or topics you love discussing?

We cannot overlook the power of research and researching potential blog niches that could be monetized is well worth the time. In addition, I suggest looking into current trends and popular topics that are in high demand for content.

I also recommend keeping things as simple as possible. This is definitely true with the process of choosing a niche. The most important thing is that you choose a topic you are passionate about. It makes the writing so much easier, and in the end makes your blog more engaging and enjoyable for you to manage.

Second challenge: Coming up with engaging and fresh content ideas over time

Once you’ve chosen your niche, the next challenge is to compile enough content ideas to post regularly. New bloggers often get excited at the beginning but fear that they will quickly run out of fresh and engaging ideas. This fear is real, and it prevents many aspiring bloggers from getting started, even though deep down they so much want to.

What I recommend

Planning ahead of time. This is as simple as that. By having brainstorming sessions where you can come up with months of content ideas, the fear simply goes away. It is so reassuring to look at a document with months of content ideas. It's like leaving on a trip knowing that you have a full tank of gas.

Using a content calendar to keep track of what you’ll publish and when can also be very helpful as well as scheduling those brainstorming sessions a couple of times a year. What new bloggers don’t often realize is that the minute you start publishing your content and engaging with your followers, many new ideas are just waiting to come your way, and very soon that shortage of content ideas simply vanishes.

Finally, engaging with your audience and followers is a great way to find out what they want more of – their feedback simply gives you great ideas for new posts.

Third challenge: Building a blog site that is simple to manage and optimized for growth

Creating and maintaining a blog site can be overwhelming and is definitely one of the most common challenges I see new bloggers face. If you’re not tech-savvy, I definitely understand the difficulties associated with launching your blog site. You want to learn more about some of those challenges in some of my previous posts:

As a web designer myself, here’s what I can tell you. If you want to make it super simple to build a blog, you are most likely NOT going to be happy with the result. It can be done however. But if you want to create a blog that looks more appealing and engaging, it involves more complexity. That’s just the way it is. It is almost as if you have to become friends with tech, at least to some degree.

What I recommend

I may be biased, but one of the best options is to build your blog site with the SMART Blog Concept. It makes things much easier.

If you’re looking for a DIY solution, I would recommend at the very least building your blog site with WordPress. It's a software that is specifically designed for bloggers, is user-friendly and has a huge amount of resources available.

If tech isn’t your jam at all or you simply want to make sure your blog site is built correctly, then outsourcing to someone you trust is probably the best option. In the end, what I will say is that having a simple, easy-to-manage blog site allows you to focus on content and audience building, which is why you want to blog in the first place.

Fourth challenge: Building and growing an audience

Having great content is just the start – you also need people to read it! Growing an audience can be one of the biggest struggles for new bloggers.

  • How are people going to find out about my blog?
  • How can I attract visitors to my blog?
  • How can I use my blog to let people know about my great articles?

Those are all top-of-the-mind questions that I hear frequently, not only from new bloggers but even from more seasoned ones.

What I recommend

Learning and implementing SEO strategies to make your blog more visible in search engines such as Google. Here’s a few articles if you’d like to learn more about SEO strategies:

Creating a way for your followers to opt-in to your email list is an absolute must. This ensures you have a way to reach your audience and continue to engage with your followers.

Sharing your blog content on social media is another way to reach a broader audience and grow your audience. All you need is a social share tool installed on your blog site, that’s it! It also makes it easy for your visitors to share your content on their social media channel, hence giving you one more possibility to expand your reach.

You might also consider using paid ads to accelerate your audience growth. This can be a bit more advanced, but it is definitely an option to consider as a new blogger.

Fifth challenge: Monetizing your blog and making it financially sustainable

Generating revenue from a blog can seem like a distant dream when you’re just starting out. But it is also an objective that is top-of-the-list with new bloggers. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard questions around monetization even from non-bloggers. However, if you’re investing into your blogging adventure, it makes sense to be thinking of how you’re going to monetize your blog. AND, it is definitely a big challenge for new bloggers. But with the right strategies, it’s definitely possible.

What I recommend

Focusing on growing your audience first, particularly an email list. It is the best way to have a pool of followers that you can help and present them with tailored offers.

Having a blog site that has the capability to sell digital products and collect payments is crucial. There are many ways to monetize a blog, including affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, or my favorite one, selling your own digital products and/or services. But regardless of which of those options you choose, it is important to have a blog site that makes it simple for you to create offers and easy for your audience to purchase.

Starting a blog comes with its fair share of challenges, but with the right strategies and guidance, you can overcome them. By finding a niche you’re passionate about, planning your content ahead of time, using user-friendly tools or outsourcing tech tasks, focusing on audience growth, and implementing smart monetization strategies, you can build a successful and sustainable blog.

And, most importantly, have fun doing it!

Perfect timing, Georges! My favorite part is brainstorming a couple of times a year to create a list of ideas to blog about.

That goes along with trying to be perfect, that was my downfall until recently.

It is amazing how much content ideas we can come up with when we sit down and brainstorm. Can’t wait to see your ideas getting published on your upcoming blog site.
